Asian American —history of people who are neither white nor black
In the American society where people are identified and labeled by the color of their skin or/and race, Asian immigrant community had to fit in the 'American' category by dissociating with one another and disconnecting themselves from their own unique cultural values.
Under the label of "Asian American," Asians in the U.S., no matter who they really are, were broadly recognized as a whole.
The notion of Asian American was created by the American society; however, its notion has been reestablished after remarkable events like the civil rights movement and Asian American power movement that occurred in the 1960's. Through these movements and activities, Asian Americans were able to face several new changes in their lives.
The new Asian American notion shows their contribution through challenging themselves against the discriminatory society and fighting for their own rights. By disowning words like "Orientals" that degrade their identity and fighting against racism in American society, Asian American individuals strive to prove the world that they deserve the equal civil rights as other American citizens.
Asian Americans are strongly determined to show their true form of identity. Through such powerful movements, Asian Americans are willing to reestablish their position in American society.
